Chapter 17: We Need Diverse Books

We Need Diverse Books is a "non-profit and grassroots organization of children's book lovers that advocates essential changes in the publishing industry to produce and promote literature that reflects and honors the lives of all young people." Their goal is to inform people about books that feature diverse characters so that all children can find literature in which they can "see themselves". Children need to see themselves in books in order to feel connected to the human experience. Books are mirrors, but are also windows. Children need this in order to fully understand the world around us. Books give readers a glimpse into cultures they may not be familiar with. This site provides programs, anthologies, resources, and blogs for people interested in diversity in literature.
