  Quick Reference of Awards, Honors, and Book Lists

  • Printz-honors books that exemplify literary excellence; sponsored by the ALA publication Booklist
  • YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) Award for Excellence in Nonfiction- given to the best nonfiction book for young adults (ages 12-18) during a November 1st-October 31st publishing year; winner is announced at ALA Youth Media Awards
  • Great Graphic Novels for Teens- a list of recommended graphic novels and illustrated nonfiction for 12-18 year olds; prepared by YALSA
  • Best Fiction for Young Adults- list of titles published for young adults in the past 14 months; provides librarians a resource to use for collection development for 12-18-year-olds; created by YALSA's Best Fiction for Young Adults Blogging Team
  • Margaret A Edwards Award- honors an author and his/her body of work that helps adolescents become aware of themselves and addressing questions about their roles and importance in relationships, societies, and the world
  • Alex Award- awarded to 10 books written for adults that have a special appeal to young adults; selected from the previous year's publishing; sponsored by Margaret A Edwards' Trust Fund, who was called "Alex" by her friends
  • Odyssey Award- awarded annually to the producer of the best audiobook for children and/or young adults that is available in English and in the United States; given by ALSC ( Association for Library Services to Children) and YALSA
  • Morris Award- honors a book published by a first-time author writing for teens and celebrating impressive new voices in YA literature; announced annually at ALA's Youth Media Awards
  • Outstanding Books for the College Bound- a Teen Book Finder Database from YALSA for finding selected lists and award winners; the list is selected by a YALSA committee of public, secondary school, and academic librarians and is revised every 5 years
  • *Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults- this list has been retired
  • Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers- fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novel titles with a high-interest "hook", catchy title or cover, etc. aimed at encouraging reading among teens who dislike reading
  • Reader's Choice Booklist- seeks to engage a wide audience of librarians, teens, and young adult enthusiasts; chooses most popular teen titles in the given year; nominations posted monthly
  • Teens' Top Ten- teens that are members of teen book groups in 15 different school and public libraries around the country nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year; readers 12-18 years old vote online between August 15th and October 15th on the Teen's Top Ten site; winners announced the following week
  • Amazing Audiobooks- annual list selected and annotated by YALSA's Amazing Audiobooks Blogging Team of notable audio recordings for young adults; chosen from those released in the past 2 years
  • Young Adults' Choices Reading List- annual list of new books that encourage adolescents to read; developed by Young Adult Choices project and selected by readers; co-sponsored by the International Literacy Association and The Children's Book Council
  • Lone Star Reading List- Texas Library Association (TLA) reading list for grades 6-8 to encourage recreational reading of current books; developed by public and school librarians in Texas
  • TAYSHAS Reading List- Texas Library Association (TLA) list of books to motivate Texas students in grades 9-12 to become lifelong readers that read for pleasure
  • Maverick Reading List- Texas Library Association (TLA) list of books to encourage readers in grades 6-12 to explore a variety of graphic novels
  • Edgar Awards for Mystery- presented by the Mystery Writers of America each spring at the Edgar Allen Poe Awards for best work in the genre
  • NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children- awarded to outstanding poetry books for children aged 3-13 
  • Orbis Pictus- recognizes excellence in nonfiction for children
  • Batchelder Award- awarded to a US publisher for most outstanding children's book from a country other than the US, written in a language other than English and translated into English for publication in the US during the preceding year
  • Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction- annual award of $5,000 to an author of an award-worthy book published for young adults the previous year; meant to encourage writers to focus on historical fiction
  • Pura Belpre Award- presented annually to Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work for children and youth portrays, affirms and celebrates Latino cultural experiences
  • Schneider Family Award- honors an author, illustrator, or book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences
  • Sibert Award- awarded annually to author(s)/illustrator(s) of most distinguished informational book published in the US and in English during the preceding year
  • Stonewall Award- presented to English-language books that have exceptional merit relating to LGBTQIA+ experiences
