The Faithful Spy

Hendrix, J. (2018). The faithful spy. NY: Amulet Books.

The Faithful Spy by John Hendrix is a graphic biography that tells the story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Bonhoeffer was an influential theologian who joined the conspiracy in the plot to kill Hitler and end the Nazi reign.

Bonhoeffer was born in Germany in 1906 and was interested in religion at a young age. The death toll of the Great War and a trip to Harlem affected his view of the world, where the prejudice and racism he witnessed strengthened his religious views. After losing his older brother in World War I he began a lifelong quest to understand human suffering in the light of his Christian faith. When Hitler came to power, Bonhoeffer was confronted with tough decisions to make. Even though he was a loyal German, he was against Hitler and felt that he must stay in Germany and fight against him. He founded the illegal Confessing Church to support those who opposed Hitler. When that was shut down he decided he would join forces with those who sought to assassinate Hitler. He spoke out against the Nazi party and helped with two unsuccessful plots to kill Hitler. His contributions to the plot were revealed and he spent a year and a half in prison. He was found guilty of trying to kill Hitler and was hanged just three weeks before Hitler committed suicide.

This graphic novel was not your typical "comic book" type graphic novel. The pages had a lot more text than most and was not set up in frames. It also had quite a few places where the font was very small (I read it on my phone). The book gives a clear picture of how Hitler came to power and the artwork sucks you in. This is a great novel for history or art fans. I enjoyed it.
